The Book of Revelations

Blessed is the one who reads the words of this prophecy, and blessed are those who

hear it and take to heart what is written in it, because the time is near. (Rev 1:3 NIV)

When people read the Book of Revelation they encounter this vast array of symbols. Some have become quite well known to the public, particularly in the late twentieth century. ... The mark of the beast, which the book talks about as some sign or mark that people receive on their hand and their forehead. Even the number of this beast--the beast being some military ruler that controls the world at the end of time--as being 666. ...

It's a sealed book. It's a scroll with seven wax seals. As you begin to open it, you get this unfolding scenario of events, beginning with war and famine and disease and earthquakes and heavenly signs. It's fairly standard. And then you begin to get these characters introduced, and there are five or six main characters. One would be the false prophet. He's like a dragon, but he speaks like a lamb. He has horns. A beast that is non-descript, some sort of horrible creature that appears to stand for the Roman government to the early Christians, but today could be any power ... some sort of evil empire of some type. And then you have the saints or the Christians,

the faithful followers of God, that are being martyred. You have two people that are very interesting, that many modern interpreters are interested in ... called the two witnesses in Chapter 11. These are, I guess you could say the two final prophets that the book expects to appear on the earth, like Moses and Elijah of ancient times in the bible. You have a dragon, who's actually identified as the devil behind the scenes, and of course you have Jesus Christ, the lamb. So it's as if there's a whole stage set with these characters, and then things begin to unfold one by one, in terms of what's supposed to happen. ...

If you open the Book of Revelation and simply begin reading it as an unfolding scenario, it goes something like this. There will be wars and famines and disease epidemics and heavenly signs that will alert the world to some sort of crisis. Then will come an Antichrist as he's called, or a political ruler, that will establish control over the whole earth. He'll be backed up with a religious ruler, who's called the false prophet. They together establish a unified social, economic and religious system that dominates the world. The only thing opposing them are the people of God and these two prophets, they're called the two witnesses, who appear in Jerusalem, and begin to speak against this power. The rest of the book, really the last half of the book is about the overthrow of this system. The beast, the false prophet, who has the number 666, the Antichrist, is overthrown with judgments and plagues. Most of them are very cosmic. Asteroids hitting the earth. The water turning to blood and that sort of thing, until finally, Jesus Christ returns as a warrior on a white horse and sets up the kingdom of God. ...

Mud Volcanoes, Azerbaijan

Take what you know about volcanoes and imagine mud volcanoes. Rather than hot lava, steam, ash and rocks, mud volcano eruptions involve cold mud, water and gas. Nearly 400 mud volcanoes, more than half of the world total, are found in Azerbaijan and the Caspian Sea. The most common have several small cones or vents and average about 13 feet high. Just be aware: In 2001, a mud volcano about nine miles from Baku, Azerbaijan’s capital, erupted with enough force to send flames hundreds of feet into the sky and spew tons of mud.

Shilin Stone Forest, China

An old local saying says, “If you have visited Kunming without seeing the Stone Forest, you have wasted your time.” The Shilin Stone Forest covers 96,000 acres with large and small stands of stone “trees.” They actually are karst formations that stand on the earth like stalagmites and looking like petrified trees. Believed to be more than 270 million years old, the stone trees emerged as limestone eroded. Legend says this is the birthplace of Ashima, who was forbidden to marry the man she loved, drowned and turned to stone in the forest. The Torch Festival celebrates her each year.

Great Blue Hole, Belize

In 1971, Jacques Cousteau boldly sailed Calypso to the Great Blue Hole, investigated and declared it one of the 10 best diving sites in the world. It’s a large underwater sinkhole near the center of Lighthouse Reef, about 62 miles from Belize City. So much for the mystery. The circular hole is nearly 1,000 feet across and 410 feet deep, boasting underwater caves, fantastic coral formations and many species of tropical fish darting through the clear water.

Mono Lake, California

“In the middle distance there rests upon the desert plain what appears to be a wide sheet of burnished metal, so even and brilliant is its surface. It is Lake Mono.” So wrote Israel C. Russell in the “Quaternary History of the Mono Valley” in 1889. Much of the ancient saline lake hasn’t changed. Mono Lake, which covers more than 70 square miles, has no fish. It is believed the lake could be 1 million to 3 million years old, and it is among the oldest lakes in North America. One thing that has changed here as the landscape makes the transition from the Sierra Nevada Mountains to the Great Basin Desert is the appearance of tufa, unusual rock formations that crowd the shore. The tufa towers are limestone and grow underwater; they are exposed because the lake grew more shallow when water diversions started in 1941.

Goblin Valley State Park, Utah

Goblins? Hoodoos? The names fit these mysterious-looking rock formations in Goblin Valley State Park in southern Utah and surrounded on three sides by Canyonlands and Capitol Reef national parks and Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. Sandstone erosion made the shapes; the small, spherical shapes of the goblins combine with the hoodoos, rock pinnacles in the shape of mushrooms, to give the landscape an eerie edge.

Zlatni Rat, Croatia

The sand of Zlatni Rat (Golden Cape) beach in Croatia is continually on the move, as wind, tides and currents sculpt the beach into ever-varying shapes. (Don’t worry — these changes are subtle and sunbathers are not washed away). The beach is a sand spit extending from a promontory near Bol, on the southern coast of the island of Brac. The same winds that subtly change the shape of the spit are the fuel for windsurfing adventures.

Pamukkale, Turkey

Cotton Castle, Pamukkale’s translated name, is a wildly popular tourist site. Seventeen hot-water springs in the area spill out water in temperatures ranging from 95 degrees to 212 degrees, which contains a high concentration of calcium bicarbonate. The water flows off a cliff, cools and hardens into calcium deposits that form terraces, as white as cotton and bright enough to be easily seen from the town of Denizli, which is on the opposite side of the valley, 12 miles away. These terraces, which continue to grow, hold pools of water. Soakers are welcome; shoes are not, to protect the deposits.

Racetrack Playa, California

Even NASA cannot explain it. It’s best to gaze in wonder at the sliding rocks on this dry lake bed in Death Valley National Park. Racetrack Playa is almost completely flat, 2.5 miles from north to south and 1.25 miles from east to west, and covered with cracked mud. The rocks, some weighing hundreds of pounds, slide across the sediment, leaving furrows in their wakes, but no one has actually witnessed it. Is it the wind? Something to do with ice? Will it ever be explained?

Middle East Desert Floor Drawings

The secrets of these stone structures are only now being unraveled, probably because it is nearly impossible to get the entire picture at ground level. But with views from airplanes and satellites, archaeologists have discovered thousands of these “floor drawings” of stones in Syria, Jordan and Saudi Arabia. The wheels measure from 82 feet to 230 feet across and could be at least 2,000 years old; other stone structures are far older. What were they used for? Did they carry special meaning? That is still secret.

The Giants Causeway, Northern Ireland

If an Irishman tells you that Finn McCool built the Giants Causeway so two feuding giants could settle their differences, check for a twinkle in his eyes, for perhaps he has been telling you a folk tale. Volcanic activity 60 million years ago created these rugged, symmetrical rock formations, seemingly steppingstones that lead into mists and legend. In 1693, Sir Richard Bulkeley, a fellow at Trinity College in Dublin, presented a paper on this “natural curiosity” near Bushmills in County Antrim, Northern Ireland. The arguing began: Was this made by men with picks? Was this nature’s handiwork? Did a giant place these steppingstones? It wasn’t until 1771 that the origin of the causeway was put down to volcanic activity. Or was it?

Eye of Africa, Mauritania

The Eye of Africa — whose official name, the Richat Structure, seems so mundane in comparison — was spotted in central Mauritania by astronauts on early space missions. In the expanse of the Western Sahara Desert, the formation has a diameter of about 30 miles. At first, scientists thought a meteorite had hit the Earth, causing this impression. But now it is believed to be a symmetrical uplift that erosion has revealed. No one has explained yet why it is circular.

The mystery of the formation of Guelb Richat still called '' the eye of Africa '' by the astronomers, remains whole and is worth for many other scientific forwardings.
Several assumptions were considered: impact of a large meteorite, tectonic structure or convexity caused by the installation in the Precambrian rocks sediments of major origin. This last assumption is favoured today. The whole eye extends on 180 mile (350 km) and its pupil on 20 mile (40 km).

Salar de Uyuni, Bolivia

It’s fun to gaze at mysterious sites, wondering how they came about. The harder they are to explain, the more the theories pop up.

The world’s largest salt flat, Salar de Uyuni, is located in Southwest Bolivia. At 10,582 square kilometers (4,085 square miles), the Salar de Uyuni becomes the world’s largest mirror when covered in water. If this fascinating phenomenon alone wasn’t enough to entice tourists to visit, there is also an antique train cemetery in the area, 3km outside the town of Uyuni. Because the Salar de Uyuni is so flat, NASA is able to utilize it to calibrate some of their satellites. While the Salar de Uyuni itself is devoid of wildlife, it is used as the breeding grounds for some species of pink South American flamingos once a year in November. There are hotels for tourists nearby and they are almost all built out of salt blocks, including the furniture.

Galactic Superwave

Some believe that there is a high risk for a Galactic Superwave in 2012. The last galactic superwave occurred 13,000 years ago, ending the ice age and causing worldwide extinctions which nearly wiped out the human race. Judgement Day

Jesus spoke of the judgement day when he walked among men. He said "Every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of' Judgement" Matthew 12:36. "He that rejecteth me and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him. The word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day" John 12:48. Jesus spoke of a day of judgement on the last day. He said that two kinds of words were important: what we say and what he said. We will be judged by his words and by our words. This means that we need to pay attention to what we say and to what he says in the Bible.

But how can we be sure that there really will be a day of Judgement? We can be sure there is a judgement because he proved there would be a Judgement by his own resurrection from the dead. The apostle Paul said, "God now commandeth all men everywhere to repent because he hath appointed a day in the which he will judge the world by righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained, whereof he hath given assurance unto all men in that he hath raised him from the dead" Acts 17:30,31. "For we must all appear before the judgement seat of Christ, that everyone may receive the things done in his body, according to what he hath done whether it be good or bad" II Corinthians 5:10. We can be sure that there is a judgement day and we can be sure that everyone on earth will be there.

The climax of the judgement scene is recorded by John in the last book of the Bible, the Book of Revelation. "And I saw a great white throne and him that sat upon it from whose face the heaven and the earth fled away, and there was found no place for them. And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God and the books were opened, and another book was opened, which is the book of Life, and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. And the sea gave up the dead which were in it and death and hell (Hades) delivered up the dead which were in them and they were judged every man according to their works." Revelation 20:11-13.

Here are some clear facts from the Bible about the judgement: Fact No. 1: Man must give account of himself on the day of judgement. (Matthew 12:36; Romans 14:10,12). Fact No. 2: All of us shall appear at the judgment. (Acts 17:31; II Corinthians 5:10) Fact No. 3: We're to be judged by how we measure up to the word of God. (John 12:48; Revelation 20:11-13) Fact No. 4: We need to get ready for the judgement day. (II Corinthians 5:10; Matthew 12:36-41)

Now if Jesus is going to be the judge and his words are going to be the standard or rule by which we are judged it becomes very important that we learn what his words are. In the great sermon on the mount he said, "Not everyone who saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven, but he that doeth the will of my father which is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name and in thy name cast out devils and in thy name done more wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you. Depart from me you that work iniquity" Matthew 7:21-23. Those who do his will, will not receive this condemnation and punishment. What will you say at the judgement?

The Bible

The Bible is the Holy Book written by Holy God who is the Creator of this beautiful world. The Holy Bible is without question a very ancient book, having been completed about 1,900 years ago. In its original languages (mostly Hebrew and Greek) it has never been changed, and each and every word in the original languages is from the mouth of God. The Bible is divided into two parts (the Old Testament and the New Testament), with each part divided into many books. Each book is divided into chapters, and each chapter is divided into verses. One of the books is named Second Timothy (2 Timothy). In Chapter 3, verse 16 (2 Timothy 3:16) of this book Holy God tells us:

All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.


In Jeremiah 36:1-4 God gives an example of how the Bible was written:


And it came to pass in the fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah, that this word came unto Jeremiah from the LORD, saying, Take thee a roll of a book, and write therein all the words that I have spoken unto thee against Israel, and against Judah, and against all the nations, from the day I spake unto thee, from the days of Josiah, even unto this day. It may be that the house of Judah will hear all the evil which I purpose to do unto them; that they may return every man from his evil way; that I may forgive their iniquity and their sin. Then Jeremiah called Baruch the son of Neriah: and Baruch wrote from the mouth of Jeremiah all the words of the LORD, which He had spoken unto him, upon a roll of a book [the roll of the book is the Bible].
